NBA Rundown: The Biggest Stories in Basketball After Week 1 of Season 20242025

NBA game packed with fans excited for the 2024-2025 season

The LA Lakers Making History

All eyes were on the Los Angeles Lakers, with the first father son duo, in the history of the league Bronny and LeBron James, making headlines. The new head coach, JJ Reddick, an ex-NBA player with relatively no coaching experience, landed one of the most coveted jobs in the sport.
Three games in for the LA Lakers and they are at 3-0. A perfect run so far, with Anthony Davis being the star of all 3 games. Reddick and the LA Lakers have arguably silenced the critics for now, with their impeccable streak. However, with the NBA game schedule being as hectic and compact as it is, and with the season in its infancy, we wait and watch to see if they can sustain this impressive form.

LeBron and Bronny
James make NBA history as the first father-son duo for the LA Lakers.

Mavericks Making Moves

Klay Thompson, one of the greatest shooters in NBA history, has left from the Golden State Warriors – a team he helped lead to four championship titles. After spending his entire career with them, Thompson exited in this offseason to join the Dallas Mavericks led by Luka Doncic also known as Luka Magic, the greatest Slovenian player of all time.
Every NBA fan waited impatiently for the release of the NBA game schedule to see when Klay will be back at Oracle Arena to face his former team. In his first game with the Dallas Mavericks, Klay managed to look like his old self, having broken the record for most three pointers made in a debut for the Mavericks.

Will the 76ers Finally Get Out of Their Slump?

The Philadelphia 76ers are always on the champions contenders list at the beginning of the season. However, as luck and timing have it, the game schedule always inadvertently hindered their chances, with having their star players getting injured and missing most of the post season, if not all of it.
During this off season, they acquired Paul George from the LA Clippers and that immediately shot them up the ranking to most likely team to win this year. But with the schedule being as dense as it is, Joel Embiid, their star player, announced right before the season began that he would sit out any back to back games for fear of getting injured and missing the playoffs yet again. All eyes are fixated on Embiid
and the 76ers to see if this year will finally be their year.

Rafa’s Influence on the Next Generation

Having inspired millions of people across the globe to pick up the game of tennis, he has definitely made his impact on the ATP tour and at the highest levels. Carlos Alcaraz, the Spanish sensation, has taken the world by storm a couple of years ago and has already reached the pinnacle of tennis.
Alcaraz, idolizing The King of Clay growing up, has molded his play style based on Nadal. The incredible power in his forehand and his unmatched skill on Clay has won him the title of “Prince of Clay”. Given the age difference between these two amazing players, they never really got the chance to play each other during Nadal’s peak. They were, however, able to play 2 player tennis, also known as Doubles, during the 2024 Olympics that were held in Paris.
His inspiration was not confined to just European countries, but the whole world. Lebanese tennis players have always revered Rafa and his uncanny ability on a clay, especially given how most tennis venues in Lebanon are clay courts. It’s not just the men – women tennis players from all generations have always praised Rafa for this unparalleled grit and remarkable technique.

Star Up-and-Comer Teams up with One of the Greatest Passers

Victor Wembenyama and Chris Paul team up for an exciting season with the San Antonio Spurs.

We can’t forget about Victor Wembenyama, dubbed The Alien. The French phenomenon had an incredible introductory year which won him the “Rookie of the Year” award – unanimously, might I add. He played nearly 25 games at the beginning of last season out of position and before being switched back to his usual position, being a center, with the uncanny ability to handle the ball like a small guard.
This year, the Spurs added the point god, Chris Paul, already on his 19th season of the league and having never won the title before, joined the young SA Spurs, linking up with one of the greatest talents of his generation – Victor Wembenyama. Chris Paul’s unique skill set, which is being a general with unparalleled passing ability and his eagle-like vision of the court, make them on the most threatening teams to play against.
The entire world was set ablaze by Victor’s abilities last year and we cannot wait to see what he does this year next to one of the greatest point guards of his generation. How will this new duo fair in this very competitive league and season? Will their NBA results reflect their talent, or will the league only think of them as a nuisance and nothing more?

The Rebirth of a Dynasty?

Steph “The Chef” Curry, the baby-faced assassin, is the major reason behind the USA’s gold medal win in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Stephen Curry, drafted by the Golden State Warriors back in 2009, has been the face of the franchise for the better part of a decade now. With his unmatched shooting ability, to allegedly being the greatest shooter of all time and forever changing the game of basketball, has had a tumultuous career.
From being riddled with injuries in his early career, to being criticized for his size, he rose higher than anyone could have fathomed. After garnering 2 MVP (most valuable player) titles back in 2015 and 2016, with the 2016 title being the first unanimous MVP vote ever, the Golden State warriors and Steph curry have had a few rough seasons. Their last championship win was in 2022 against the mighty Boston Celtics. Having made some trades in the off season and placing their faith in their young core, they have taken the league by storm this season. Breaking the record for the highest blow outs in the first 2 days of the season, the league is on notice and so are we.
Could this be the season where Steph Curry gets his fifth ring and finally cement himself as the greatest point guard of all time? Only time will tell, but you can definitely place a bet on it!

The NBA and its Regional Influence

All these players and teams have had incredible influence not only in the US but all over the world, and many countries have reaped the benefits, Lebanon being one of them. Having one of the best leagues in the region with the highest level of basketball, the Lebanese basketball league is one to be watched closely.
The Lebanese league hosts many talented players, some that played in the NBA earlier in their careers. A slight difference between the Lebanese basketball league and the NBA is that the games in Lebanon are played over 40 minutes, 10 minutes per quarter instead of the 12 minutes played in the NBA. The Lebanese basketball league schedule being less hectic than the NBA gives its players the rest required to always play at a 100%.
